What’s the difference between a Therapy Dog and a Service Dog?

Class Goals:

The focus of this class is on preparing the handler and dog for the therapy environment.  Skills include working around medical equipment, loud noises, food, toys, and other distractions.  Topics covered include stress and calming signals in dogs, infection control, medical ethics, general liability, and handling difficult visitation situations.  The price of the class also includes a Therapy Dog manual and an official Therapy Dog Evaluation.


Prerequisites
  • Dogs must be Behaviorally Healthy and not have aggression issues with other dogs.
  • Dog must have passed the Canine Good Citizen test without the Gentle Leader.
  • Dogs must be at least 1 year of age at the start of class and should have lived with their handlers for a minimum of 6 months to be eligible for the Therapy Dog evaluation.
  • All dogs must have Rabies and DHPP vaccinations or titers.   Proof of vaccinations or titers must be brought to first class.  Dogs without proof of vaccinations or titers will not be able to participate.  Pre-registration and pre-payment required.
  • No shock collars, e-collars, prong collars or choke chains allowed in class.
  • Pre-registration with pre-payment is required.
  • Please note: These classes sometimes fill up two months ahead of start date.  Please send in your application early!

Tuition: $220  Includes a Therapy Dog handler manual and an official Therapy Dog Test. For class participants, additional dogs with the same handler can be assessed for either test at $40.00 per extra dog. Additional handlers can be evaluated with the same dog for $40.00 per extra handler, but each handler must attend the class and complete the written test.
Duration: Once a week for 7 weeks; First class is orientation, without dogs
Class Size: 8 Dog Maximum
